Ahead of the 2021 People’s Choice Awards on December 7, the franchise’s tentpole, Vin Diesel, went on Instagram to thank the series’ fans and to campaign hard for F9.
F9 receives several nominations for People’s Choice Awards
The Fast and Furious movies have never been critical darlings. 5 of the 10 films have received a “Rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with only 2 movies receiving a “Certified Fresh” rating. The latest installment, F9, only got a measly 59% score on the review aggregate website. However, despite its relatively low score, F9 still managed to post a worldwide gross of $721 million at the global box office - the highest for a non-Chinese film this year. Fans loved F9. If you need more proof, just take a look at the film’s several People’s Choice Awards nominations. Vin Diesel himself was nominated for Action Star of 2021 and Male Movie Star of 2021, with the movie receiving Action Movie of 2021 and Movie of 2021. It’s the nomination for Movie of 2021 that Diesel decided to highlight in a recent Instagram post. In it, Diesel thanked Universal as he looked back at how far the cast has come in these last two decades. As amazing as it is to see how big the franchise has become over the years, it’s still about to get bigger. After F9, Diesel has confirmed that the series still has two more movies to go. The two-part finale for the Fast and Furious franchise is set to start shooting early next year ahead of its planned April 2023 premiere. At the same time, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has also said that the next Hobbs & Shaw film will be the last. Speaking of Johnson, the future WWE Hall of Famer still hasn’t responded to Vin Diesel’s earlier plea for him to come back to star in the series’ final set of films and reprise his role as Luke Hobbs. Having said that, it’s sad to know that the Fast & Furious saga is about to come to an end. As we’ve mentioned earlier, the movies inspired an entire generation to develop a love for cars. You could argue that the earlier films are responsible for turning the former tuning subculture into something mainstream. You probably even know a couple of car guys and gals that are into cars because of Fast and Furious. Of course, all good things eventually come to an end, and we’re excited to see what else Justin Lin has in store for its fans.
