It all feels like it’s only a matter of time before every exclusive game for the PS4 and PS5 is on the PC. Although Sony will probably keep a few exclusives close to its chest if only for a year or two, the fact remains that Sony is not a PlayStation-exclusive company anymore. A piece of new evidence unearthed by data miners also supports this transition.
With Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered finally launching on desktops, dataminers have been busy digging into the game’s files. As spotted by VGC, some of them found files referencing a “PlayStation PC launcher,” as well as a way to link PSN accounts to the PC ports. It’s also interesting that this new discovery comes shortly after the launch of a dedicated PC Games section on the PlayStation website. It’s not clear what all of this means, but it’s evident that Sony wants to fast-track the integration of its PC ports. Last year, Sony launched the PlayStation Studios Steam page. If Sony follows Microsoft with its PC-Xbox Live account integration, we’re hoping that its launcher is just as smooth and easy to use, if not better. At the end of the day, Sony’s decision to expand to the PC is a numbers game. Its best-selling PC port, Horizon Zero Dawn, is closing in on 2.5 million units sold in almost two and a half years. More importantly, Sony is optimistic about its sales expectations, believing that it will sell at least $300 million in PC ports before the current fiscal year ends. In addition to this, Sony wants to bring half of its first-party exclusive library to the PC platform by 2025. Ultimately, the presence of the “PlayStation PC Launcher” in the files of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for the PC suggests that its expanded PC plans are coming sooner rather than later. Speaking of Sony, leakers suggest that the company is holding a State of Play event this month, presumably to steal the spotlight away from Gamescom 2022. But, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is pushed back to September to be more in line with the past two years. Of course, we’d love for Sony to hold a State of Play event for two months straight. Either way, we’re bound to hear more from Sony as we draw nearer to the release date of God of War: Ragnarok.
