Nolan’s first film that isn’t produced by Warner Bros. will star Cillian Murphy as the scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The movie will follow Oppenheimer and his role in the creation of the atomic bomb, the weapon that ended World War II. Oppenheimer led the Manhattan Project and was instrumental in putting United States ahead of the global arm’s race forever. The film will also be based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, which won a Pulitzer Prize. The explosive teaser doesn’t give away much but it sets the tone for the destruction caused by the creations of Murphy’s character. Oppenheimer marks relatively uncharted territory for Nolan. This is the first time that Nolan is working with a different production company. Despite making movies with Warner Bros., for years, Nolan partnered up with Universal Pictures after shopping it around when Warner Bros. refused to give in to his demands. In addition, Nolan is shooting Oppenheimer using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. This makes Oppenheimer the first movie to have sections in IMAXA black and white analog photography. As an IMAX fanatic, Nolan has used the technology extensively for years. The cinematography alone will guarantee a few awards nods for Oppenheimer if not wins.

You could argue that Nolan already tackled a similar film with 2017’s Dunkirk, but that movie didn’t have real-life characters. At the end of the day, Nolan more than deserves the benefit of the doubt. We might not have a trailer for Oppenheimer yet, but the teaser confirms that Nolan’s fingerprints are all over the project. We’ll likely find out more about Oppenheimer as we get close to its July 21, 2023, premiere date. Speaking of Nolan, Christian Bale recently spoke about the possibility of a coming back to do a fourth Batman film. According to the longtime Nolan collaborator, he will reprise his role as the dark knight if Nolan is on board.
