In the absence of new blockbuster movies, Sony’s re-release of the latest Spider-Man movie gave cinema-goers something to look forward to during what would have otherwise been a boring Labor Day weekend. With a haul of over $6 million across 3,935 cinemas in the US over this period, The More Fun Stuff originally took the highly coveted top US box office spot. Spider-Man: No Way Home is the 27th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Tom Holland in the role of the titular character: Spider-Man and a stellar supporting cast that includes Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Benedict Wong, Alfred Molina, and Willem Dafoe. The movie grossed $1.9 billion against a budget of $200 million to become the highest-grossing film of 2021 and Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. The re-release was announced in celebration of Spider-Man’s 60th birthday. It has thirteen minutes of extra footage and deleted scenes. In addition to this, the National Association of Theater Owners revealed that Saturday saw the most cinema-goers in 2022 so far. The reason behind the impressive showing is that Saturday, September 3 was National Cinema Day. With tickets going for $3, around 8.1 million people trooped out to watch some of the movies on cinemas’ slates. According to Kevin Feige, who served as one of the movie’s producers, Disney and Sony are developing a story for another addition to the franchise. However, this has not officially been confirmed by either of the studios. Nevertheless, given the franchise’s success and the records it set, we expect another Spider-Man movie to grace the big screen in the nearest future.
