Is The Tekken X Street Fighter Cancellation Confirmed?
Crossover fighting games are not new. Marvel and DC, for example, frequently collaborate in series of fighting games that sees the most popular characters from their respective IPs battling it out. Thus, when Tekken X Street Fighter was announced in 2010, fans were understandably excited. Although audiences were treated to Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken in 2012, many still wanted to see how Bandai Namco would handle its own take on the crossover. According to Tekken producer, Katsuhiro Harada, “the project died” early in its development cycle, saying that they stopped working on the game when they were “about 30% done.” These comments by Harada were made on his own talk and variety show on YouTube. In the stream, Harada talked to Kouhei Ikeda, the game director of Tekken 7. He added that the studio already had motions and characters such as Dhalsim, as well as the female character models, all done and that they had turned out pretty well. He also expressed regret about not having been able to show audiences their progress. While it’s not uncommon for video games to get canceled during development, it doesn’t make it actually happening sting any less. Bandai Namco first announced Tekken X Street Fighter at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July 2010. The game was supposed to complement the aforementioned Street Fighter X Tekken by Capcom. However, Bandai Namco’s game would be designed more similarly to mirror the 3D fighting style of the Tekken games. Since the game was first announced in 2010, Harada has gone on to imply numerous times that the project was either in development or on hold. However, this is the first time that Harada has said that it is officially canceled. Harada claims that the reason for the cancellation of Tekken X Street Fighter was for business reasons. He says that the studio didn’t want to split the Tekken player base. If it’s any consolation, the Tekken franchise has seen several crossover games over the years. In fact, fans can look forward to seeing Kazuya Mishima make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The iconic Tekken character will serve as the fifth downloadable character for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2.
