For the franchise’s 25th anniversary, Capcom has a lot of things planned. This includes the game’s eighth mainline installment in Resident Evil Village and an animated canon movie featuring franchise mainstays, Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy, that is scheduled to release on Netflix. With so much going on for Resident Evil, it can be difficult, even for the most dedicated fans, to keep up. Case in point, did you know that a Resident Evil cinematic reboot is scheduled to release later in 2021? Scroll down below to learn more about the upcoming Resident Evil cinematic reboot.

What Is The Title of the New Resident Evil Movie?

After being announced in 2019 and flying under the radar for the better part of the past two years, the new Resident Evil movie is finally starting to gain traction, with the director, Johannes Roberts, doing more interviews. In particular, during an SXSW panel with IGN’s Lucy O’Brien, Roberts revealed that the title of the new Resident Evil movie will be “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.” He further expands on the significance of Raccoon City in the film, which is also the setting of the first three Resident Evil games. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 followed events set primarily throughout Raccoon City during the outbreak. Meanwhile, the first Resident Evil game is set in the forests outside of Raccoon City, inside the Spencer Mansion.

Does the New Resident Evil Movie Have a Trailer?

Surprisingly, no. You’d think that a film set to release in September would have a trailer by now, but there’s very little media for the new Resident Evil movie available as of the moment. Instead, all we have to go on is bits of information from news outlets and a lengthy interview from the director of the film. With Capcom set to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary in May though, we’re hoping that they’ll at least take the opportunity to release an official trailer by then.

Is The New Resident Evil Movie a Sequel?

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is most definitely not a sequel to existing Resident Evil games, movies, and other media. Instead, it will follow an original story that will serve as the foundation for the cinematic reboot of the franchise. But, video game fans will be delighted to know that the movie’s plot will reportedly combine the events of the first two Resident Evil games. Specifically, the movie will split between the Raccoon City Police Station and the Spencer Mansion. As we’ve already mentioned earlier, the Spencer Mansion is the setting of the first-ever Resident Evil game. It’s located in the outskirts of Raccoon City, with Raccoon City’s elite law enforcement unit, the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, otherwise known as S.T.A.R.S, being sent there to investigate a series of bizarre cannibalistic murders. In reality, the S.T.A.R.S members were lured by their Captain, Albert Wesker, in an attempt to get rid of them and also test the combat capabilities of the bio-organic weapons that ran rampant in the research facility located underneath the mansion. Meanwhile, the second game revolved primarily on Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. The former is the sister of Chris Redfield, one of the two playable members of the S.T.A.R.S Alpha team in the first game. She goes to Raccoon City to try and investigate what happened to his brother. There, she meets the latter, who is a rookie cop starting his first day in the Raccoon City Police Department. It is currently unknown which story elements exactly Roberts will draw from the original titles. However, he did refer to 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake as the “template” for the new Resident Evil movie. We also don’t know if Roberts will draw on story elements from Resident Evil 3 as well. Canonically, the events of Resident Evil 3 ran in parallel with that of Resident Evil 2.
