A new Armored Core game would be perfect for next-gen consoles
FromSoftware’s first Armored Core game was released back in 1997 for the original PlayStation. The third-person mecha shooter would go on to define the studio’s expertise for the better part of the next decade as FromSoftware released several sequels and spin-offs. Following the success of 2011’s Dark Souls and mixed reviews of 2013’s Armored Core: Verdict Day, FromSoftware focused its resources on working on Soulsborne games exclusively. For years, Armored Core fans clamored for a new installment to no avail - until now.
According to several screenshots that have been circulating online, FromSoftware is working on a new Armored Core game. In addition, a certain ResetEra user posted a statement from someone who recently filled out a survey form from FromSoftware. The same user posted a photo detailing a “sci-fi world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki” with a “high degree of freedom in customization,” among other things. Surprisingly enough, this isn’t the first time that Miyazaki has talked about making a new Armored Core game. Back in 2017, the famous Dark Souls director revealed that FromSoftware was working on two unannounced titles alongside a new Armored Core game. By process of elimination, we can confirm that one of these two games is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with the other possibly being Elden Ring. Now that Elden Ring is finally set to launch on February 25, 2022, it would make a lot of sense for Miyazaki to reveal what FromSoftware is up to for 2023 and beyond. Interestingly, an Armored Core game was nowhere to be found on the leaked Nvidia GeForce Now games list. You’d think that FromSoftware’s unannounced Armored Core sequel would be on the list seeing that the game’s been in development since 2022. Unless, of course, FromSoftware intends to release the next Armored Core installment as a PS5-exclusive, which makes sense given FromSoftware’s close relationship with Sony and PlayStation Studios. Unfortunately, everything that you just read up until this point is mere speculation. Until FromSoftware confirms anything, all Armored Core fans can do is wait for official news.
