Is Insomniac Games Working a New Marvel’s Spider-Man Game?
Following the success of the short but well-received Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, fans are expecting an announcement that they’re working on a new Marvel’s Spider-Man game next. However, as we’ve already mentioned, Insomniac Games, who are best known for making first-party Sony titles like the Ratchet & Clank series and Marvel’s Spider-Man, have yet to confirm that they’ve begun development in the game. But, as has been the case in recent years, eagle-eyed fans are quick to notice signs that might potentially point towards such titles being in the works. Over at his profile, Jason Hickey has updated his “About” portion to include that he’s currently working on an “unannounced project” at Insomniac Games. He didn’t add anything else outside of confirming that he’s working on something new for Insomniac. However, his past work with California-based video game developers suggests that he’s working on Spider-Man 2. As the Lead Environment Artist for the first Spider-Man game, it only makes sense that Hickey returns to work on the sequel. Of course, this isn’t to say that he could be working at something else. After all, Insomniac Games is a huge company. They have multiple IPs under their belt. But, this is 2021, and the two franchises that Insomniac Games is most notable for are Ratchet & Clank and Spider-Man. The former is set to see a sequel in June via Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, so it makes very little sense that he’ll update his profile to include that he’s working on the said game. This is especially since he specifically added “unannounced project”, which makes it even more unlikely that he’s working on the upcoming title. Another possibility is that Hickey is working on a VR game for Insomniac Games. It certainly lines up with Hickey’s experience, he previously worked on VR Worlds for PlayStation VR at SCE London Studios as the Lead Environment Artist and Assistant Art Director. We’re also not discounting the fact that Insomniac Games could be working on a new IP. So, what does this all mean? Is Insomniac Games working on a new Marvel’s Spider-Man game? Or is Hickey working on a new IP for Insomniac Games? At this point, all we have to go on is that he’s working on an “unannounced project”, which could very well be anything. However, given the fact that there seems to be a two-year development cycle between the two Marvel’s Spider-Man game so far, Hickey may indeed be working on Spider-Man 2, which would give it a 2022 release window. Either way, this is all potentially good news. Insomniac Games is one of the premier developers in the industry. Whether it’s Spider-Man 2 or not, fans will definitely want to know more about the “unannounced project” that Hickey is working on.
