Battlefield Goes Mobile
In a surprising turn of events, Electronic Arts has announced a new Battlefield mobile game set to release in 2022. Industrial Toys, a company acquired by EA in 2018, will spearhead the development of Battlefield Mobile. Meanwhile, DICE, which has been in charge of the development of the Battlefield games for years, will serve as partners for the upcoming mobile title. DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson confirmed the news via an official blog post. According to Gabrielson, this is a game that the developers have spent years prototyping on other platforms. He then emphasized how Battlefield mobile is a “standalone game” that will be a “completely different game”, referring to the upcoming Battlefield sequel that DICE, Criterion, and DICE LA are all working together on. He pointed out how Battlefield mobile will be “designed specifically for the mobile platform.” Finally, Gabrielson mentioned that Battlefield mobile is set to enter a testing period ahead of its 2022 release window. He promises to reveal more about the game soon. As previously mentioned, fans are eagerly awaiting news of a new Battlefield game. Although the announcement of Battlefield Mobile is indeed very much welcome, fans are still expecting more. In particular, a proper trailer with a release window or date for the next Battlefield game, which EA promises is set to release sometime in 2021. Battlefield 6 (or whatever it is called) will mark the first Battlefield game to release in three years. The last new Battlefield game to release was Battlefield V in 2018. Before this, the Battlefield franchise saw an annual release starting with 2002’s Battlefield 1942 until 2016’s Battlefield 1. EA’s decision to release a Battlefield mobile game shouldn’t come off as a big surprise. In fact, it’s more or less expected. Other major franchises have since embraced the mobile platform in recent years. This includes one of Battlefield’s biggest competitors, Call of Duty, with TiMi Studios’ Call of Duty Mobile back in 2019. Gamers have come to associate the Battlefield experience with three things. Namely, huge and destructible environments, tons of players fighting it out in a massive battlefield, and vehicular mayhem. With that said, it’ll be interesting to see how the Battlefield experience translates to mobile platforms.
