Kidding aside, the Targaryen civil war plays a key role in George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel, Fire & Blood, which serves as the source material for House of the Dragon. After the Game of Thrones spin-off got a trailer earlier this year, the latest footage features new scenes and a closer look at the central conflict that will define the show. Have a look at the trailer below: The previous trailer ended with the ominous warning, “History does not remember blood. It remembers names.” This one opens up with a similarly menacing phrase: “War is afoot.” House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21 on HBO and HBO Max and will serve as a prequel to Game of Thrones with its events having a significant impact on the War of the Seven Kings even though it is set hundreds of years in the past. As already mentioned, the prequel will explore the civil war between the competing heirs in House Targaryen. If you paid close attention to Game of Thrones, you’ll know that the fall of House Targayen didn’t start with Aeris II Targaryen’s descent into madness. Rather, it was more of the final nail in the coffin. House Targaryen was a far cry from its golden era by the time the Usurper, Robert Baratheon rebelled. The infighting between Aegon II and his half-sister, Rhaenyra, over who would succeed the throne of their father, Viserys I, is arguably what led to their eventual downfall. Unlike Game of Thrones, we already know how House of the Dragon will likely end - with Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon III, succeeding his grandfather as both rival monarchs pass away during the two-year-long war of succession. George R.R. Martin is heavily involved with House of the Dragon as he is credited as the co-creator of the show. The exciting entry shouldn’t deviate too much from its source material. Also, it’s not the only project Martin is keen on exploring with HBO. After signing a five-year development deal, Martin confirmed earlier this year that it is overseeing various ideas for spin-offs, which might include a Jon Snow sequel and the second season of House of the Dragon.
